What first prompted you to consider running for office?
I was born and raised in Marshall County and my grandchildren are the 10th generation to call Marshall County home which gives me a great understanding of the interests and concerns of our citizens. I decided to run for office because of a strong desire to preserve the values we hold and to improve the lives of others. To put it simply, it was the right thing to do.
How will your background help serve you in the Legislature?
During my time as Secretary, I had the pleasure of serving and working in Montgomery through 8 legislative sessions. I experienced firsthand how our government works and learned how to get things done.
What are some of your legislative priorities?
A focus on education will influence my legislative priorities and will center around high-quality education and care for all children. This includes providing for the needs of children to thrive and be successful and would encompass health, nutrition, safety, and parent support all of which impact our economy, workforce and wellbeing of our citizens.
Another priority is to address the impact of the immigration surge that undermines the quality of education, health care and other social services.
What do you think people understand the least about our health care system?
In listening to those who have experienced serious or chronic medical issues, the understanding on how to navigate the health care system seems to be the greatest challenge.
If you could change anything about our state’s health care system, what would it be?
Create easier and more available access.
How can the Medical Association – and physicians statewide – help you address Alabama’s health challenges?
The Medical Association-and physicians state-wide could help create a public private partnership to provide childcare for the professionals that provide medical services. This would allow for the retention and recruitment of more physicians, nurses and staff to address Alabama’s health challenges, and also improve their ability to better provide for those having health challenges knowing their children are in a safe, loving and high-quality environment.
What is the one thing you would like to say to physicians in your district?
I know many of the physicians in my district personally and admire their selfless commitment to the patients they serve.
